About Nikolai Beiers (Niko) – Founder and German Teacher at How To Study German
Hi, I’m Niko (Nikolai Beiers) — a native German speaker and the person behind everything on this website.
I’ve spent 8 years and over 5,000 hours helping people learn German — the last 7 years entirely online. My students include doctors preparing for their medical language exam (Fachsprachprüfung), managers who need confident German in meetings, software developers relocating to Berlin, and people who simply want to communicate with their German-speaking partner or in-laws.
Over all these years, I noticed the same patterns: my students kept struggling with the same topics. Cases. Articles. Adjective endings. Not because they weren’t smart — but because most textbooks explain these topics in the most confusing way possible.
So I started writing my own explanations. First for my students. Then for everyone. That’s how HowToStudyGerman.com was born — a collection of self-study resources that make German grammar logical and learnable.
Today, the site has 69 grammar articles, 90 interactive quizzes, 57 vocabulary lists, and 26 short stories — all free. Plus two digital tools that I built to solve the two biggest problems I kept seeing: knowing der, die, das and getting adjective endings right.

Note: This website offers digital self-study resources only — articles, quizzes, short stories, an eBook, and the Article Trainer. No private lessons or tutoring are offered or sold on this website.
How I Create These Resources (And Why They Work)
I don’t believe in memorizing 300-page grammar tables. I believe in understanding the logic behind German — and then practicing until it becomes automatic.
Every article on this site follows the same structure: a clear explanation with examples, a summary chart you can screenshot or print, and a quiz at the end so you can test yourself immediately. No fluff, no filler, no “it depends.”
My academic background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work & Pedagogy and a 120-Hour TESOL Certificate — but honestly, the 5,000+ hours of working with real learners are what shaped these resources the most. I know exactly where people get stuck, because I’ve seen it happen thousands of times — from A1 beginners to C1 exam candidates.
Who Is This Website For?
This site is for you if you’re learning German and want clear explanations that actually make sense. More specifically:
You need German for daily life — at the Ausländerbehörde, at the doctor, at work. You want practical vocabulary, not textbook theory.
Goethe, telc, TestDaF, DSH, ÖSD — you need to review grammar systematically and practice with quizzes that give instant feedback.
You work in a German-speaking company — as a doctor, engineer, manager, or developer — and want to stop making grammar mistakes in emails and meetings.
Your partner, your in-laws, your friends speak German. You want to finally understand — and be understood.

The free resources on this site cover a lot. But for two specific problems — knowing der, die, das and mastering adjective endings — articles alone aren’t enough. You need tools that force you to practice.
🔤 The Article Trainer — $65
Stop guessing. Most students rely on “feeling”, but that stops working at level A2. The Article Trainer uses active recall and spaced repetition to fix this permanently.
- 1,000+ Hand-Picked Nouns: Every essential noun from A1 to C1, organized by grammar pattern.
- Pick Your Level: A1–A2, A2–B1, B1–B2, B2–C1, or all levels mixed — practice only the words that match your skill.
- Spaced Repetition Built-In: Words you struggle with come back automatically. Words you master fade out. The trainer adapts to your weak spots.
- Rule Explanations on Every Mistake: Get a word wrong? You see the rule behind it (“Nouns ending in -ung are always feminine”) with examples — so you learn the pattern, not just the word.
One-time payment. Lifetime access. All future updates included. Works on any device.
