German Grammar Quizzes: This page lists 50 free grammar quizzes organized by topic — from articles and cases to verbs, prepositions, and sentence structure. Each quiz tests a specific grammar rule so you can find out what you actually know and where you need more practice.

Reading grammar rules is one thing. Actually knowing them is another. These quizzes test whether the rules have stuck — or whether you’re still guessing.

I’ve sorted all quizzes by topic so you can focus on exactly what you need. If you get something wrong, go back to the grammar article for that topic, re-read the explanation, and try again.

💡 Teacher’s Tip from Niko:

If you keep getting Articles and Cases quizzes wrong, the problem usually isn’t the grammar rule — it’s that you don’t know whether a noun is der, die, or das. You can’t apply case rules to articles you don’t know in the first place.

Articles & Gender Quizzes (Der, Die, Das)

Test whether you know the correct article for German nouns. Start with Quiz 1 and work your way up — each quiz gets slightly harder.

📖 Need to review the rules first? Read the Article Rules article, or see all article types in the Articles Overview.

Cases Quizzes

German has four cases: Nominative, Accusative, Dative, and Genitive. These quizzes test whether you can pick the right article and ending for each case.

Individual Cases (A1–B2)

Mixed Cases (A2–B1)

📖 Need to review? Read the Cases Overview or go to the individual case articles: Nominative, Accusative, Dative, Genitive.

Keep Getting Cases Wrong?

Cases change the article: der → den → dem → des. But that only works if you know the base article. If you’re guessing der, die, or das, no case rule will help you. The Article Trainer fixes the root problem.

Adjective Endings Quizzes

Adjective endings change depending on the gender, case, and article type. These quizzes test whether you can pick the right ending (-e, -en, -er, -es, -em).

📖 Need to review? Start with the Adjective Endings Overview, then study each type: with definite articles, with indefinite articles, with possessive pronouns, with zero articles.

Still Guessing -e, -en, or -es?

Adjective endings follow clear patterns — but you need to see the full picture. The Adjective Endings eBook gives you all the charts, rules, and 50+ exercises in one place.

Verbs & Tenses Quizzes

Test your knowledge of German verb conjugation and tenses — from the present tense to the past perfect.

📖 Need to review? See the Tenses Overview or go to individual tense articles: Present, Perfect, Simple Past, Past Perfect.

Prepositions Quizzes

Prepositions force a specific case — Accusative, Dative, or Genitive. These quizzes test whether you know which case each preposition requires.

📖 Need to review? Start with the Prepositions Overview, then study each group: Accusative, Dative, Two-Way, Genitive.

💡 Remember: Every preposition changes the article — “für den Mann” vs. “mit dem Mann.” If you don’t know the base article, prepositions become guesswork. Practice with the Article Trainer →

Sentence Structure & Clauses Quizzes

Test your understanding of German word order and subordinate clauses — from basic sentence structure to relative and causal clauses.

📖 Need to review? Read the Word Order article, or go to specific clause types: Causal, Final, Relative, Concessive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these German grammar quizzes free?

Yes. All 50 grammar quizzes on this page are completely free. You can take them as many times as you like — and repeating quizzes after a few days is actually one of the best ways to make grammar rules stick long-term.

What level are the grammar quizzes for?

The quizzes range from A1 (complete beginner) to B2 (upper intermediate). Each quiz is labeled with its level so you can pick the right difficulty. If a quiz feels too easy, move to the next level. If it feels too hard, go back to the grammar article for that topic first.

What’s the best way to use these quizzes?

First, read the grammar article for the topic. Then take the quiz. If you score below 70%, go back and re-read the article — pay attention to the parts you got wrong. Take the quiz again after 2–3 days. This “read → test → review → retest” cycle is the most effective way to learn grammar rules permanently.

Which German grammar quiz should I start with?

If you’re a beginner, start with the Articles Quiz 1 — knowing der, die, and das is the foundation for everything else. Then move to the Nominative Case Quiz and the Present Tense Quiz. For intermediate learners, the Dative vs. Accusative Quiz and Adjective Endings Quiz 1 are good starting points.

I keep getting articles and cases wrong. What should I do?

This usually means the problem isn’t the case rules — it’s that you don’t know the base gender of the nouns. German noun genders follow learnable rules (for example, nouns ending in “-ung” are always feminine). The Article Trainer teaches you these patterns and lets you practice with 600+ nouns until the correct article becomes automatic.

Do you have vocabulary quizzes too?

Yes. You can find all vocabulary quizzes sorted by topic on the Vocabulary Quizzes Overview page. There are many quizzes from A1 to B2.
